The American Wigeon
A swimming American Wigeon The American wigeon is one of three wigeon species worldwide. It is a medium-sized dabbler with narrow wings, a wedge shaped tail and a short bill (more like a goose than duck). They are vocal ducks and are quick to detect trouble. Only the teal and shovelers fly more erratically than wigeon whose flock pattern has been compared to pigeons.

Wigeon have a bright white belly, and the males have a white wing shoulder, both of which are distinctive, even in flight. Both sexes have a salt-and-pepper pattern to the neck and head, but the mature male's head sports a metallic green patch that extends from just in front of the eye to the top of the drakes head and its forehead is nearly white, which gives the bird its common name of baldpate-as if its "hair" were receding. Wigeon bills are bluish, tipped with black. A mature male's bill is often so blue it is distinguishable in flight. Both male and females legs and feet are blue gray.
